Plants that already know this soil.

We grow indigenous tube stock from seed collected within forty kilometres of the nursery, so what you take home is suited to Central Highlands frost, clay and summer wind. No hand watering after the first year.

Getting them through the first summer

Most losses happen in the first February, and almost all of them are avoidable.

Tube stock beats advanced plants in this district nine times out of ten. A small plant puts its energy into roots instead of holding up leaves it cannot yet supply, and by year three it will have overtaken the expensive specimen planted next to it.

  1. Plant in autumn, not springSoil is still warm, rain is coming, and roots get six months to spread before the first hot day.
  2. Dig the hole twice as wide, never deeperLoose soil around the sides, firm soil underneath. A plant that sinks will rot at the collar.
  3. Water heavily, rarelyTen litres once a fortnight beats a litre every day. Shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface.
  4. Mulch, but keep it off the stemCoarse bark, seventy-five millimetres deep, pulled back a hand's width from the trunk.
  5. Guard against rabbits from day oneA single night undoes a season. Milk cartons and a bamboo stake are enough for tube stock.

Come and have a look

We are a working nursery rather than a garden centre, so bring boots and expect mud in winter. Staff are on the benches, not behind a counter, and there is always someone happy to walk your plant list with you.

Bulk orders for revegetation and Landcare groups need about eight weeks' notice. Ring first and we will grow to order.
